A cozy bookstore and art gallery open year-round in the heart of the lakes region of southern Maine, we carry mostly used books in a wide variety of subjects. Specializing in classic literature, 2Oth century fiction and poetry, we also have a wide range of books in biography, drama, history, essays, art, children's, philosophy, psychology, gardening, sociology, science and more.
We have a small section of new books as well, the majority of which are from three legendary presses: City Lights, Grove Press and New Directions. Although small (5OO+), this selection of books is an astounding collection of writings spanning more than a century. Writers like Jack Kerouac, Ezra Pound, Tennessee Williams, Charles Baudelaire, William Carlos Williams, Henry Miller, Dylan Thomas, Allen Ginsberg, Denise Levertov, Lew Welch, Marguerite Duras, William Burroughs, Samuel Beckett, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Harold Pinter, Thomas Merton, Ward Churchill, Tim Flannery, Michael Parenti, Gregory Corso, Sherman Alexie, Bob Kaufman, Gary Snyder, Charles Bukowski and so many more.
In addition to all these great books, we also have a small art gallery in the back of the store that features single artist shows spanning 4-8 weeks depending on the season. We are always interested in new artists, so drop by with a portfolio if you have some great art to show. We encourage artists who may not have an extensive rėsumė to bring in their portfolio anyway; not all great art is made by people with eight page rėsumė's!
And finally, we publish a semi-annual literary review called Omphalos every June and December. The review features excellent material from local and distant writers including fiction, poetry, essays, interviews, drama and more. We are currently distributing this review to seven bookstores in Maine and New Hampshire, and we are always looking to extend its coverage. So send us your submissions via email (quickest) or via regular mail (slowest). For more information regarding submissions please visit the Omphalos webpage here. The review emphasizes the same intent as the art gallery and that is that we are hoping to expose great art and writing from people who may not be known outside their local circle, if that, so please don't hesitate to send us something! Back issues may be available upon request. The price of each journal is $5.OO.
Come take a look around and make yourself comfortable in one of our cozy chairs! We don't care how long you hang around! Good books aren't hard to find at EFG Books!
